How About Another Round with Bowling For Soup?

Norwich UEA 08-02-16

Two years ago Bowling For Soup announced a ‘farewell UK’ tour, this year they were back in Norwich and asking 'How About Another Round' the stage is revealed to include their famous on-stage-bar ‘Ye Olde Soup Inn’. MC Lars started the line-up, he also entertained the crowd with several short slots in between each of the bands whilst the stage was being setup which meant the stage was hardly ever empty during the entire evening. If I'm completely honest I wasn't a huge fan, however having a 'host' for the evening was certainly a novel idea and there was no denying his skill at freestyle rap, using objects from the crowd and tying them in to a one of a kind rhyme. Third band on the line-up were Nottingham's Lacey, a strange pick for a decidedly upbeat evening they offer a unique sound with modern rock tones and an infectious energy, definitely one to watch. It’s always great to see an up-and-coming UK band in one of the support slots and I have no doubt that we shall be hearing more of them in the future. Next up a band who I'd wanted to see live for a few years and who certainly didn't disappoint. The Dollyrots, back after a three year break played every song you would want to hear in a Dollyrots set, 'My Best Friend’s Hot’, ‘Get Weird’ along with a fantastic punk pop cover of 'Brand New Key' ending on the crowd favourite 'Because I'm Awesome' The band had the audience singing along from start to finish and were certainly the highlight of the evening for me. By now the sold out crowd in the UEA were definitely in the partying mood, from the minute Bowling For Soup walked on stage blasting out 'Bitch Song' I was transported back to my teenage years when everything was a bit of fun, and indeed the banter between the band, the fart and fat jokes all woven in with the songs everybody loves, shows the band are back and determined to give a fans a good time. Mid set the gig takes a shift in gear as Reddick brings out his acoustic guitar for what would have been a touching rendition of 'Turbulence' made slightly less so by the crowd batting around a blown up condom. Ending with BFS self-proclaimed best song 'Girl All The Bad Guys Want' which had the entire crowd singing along, the jovial atmosphere of the evening is exactly what we've come to expect from BFS and they certainly didn't disappoint here’s hoping they come back for another round soon.
